Dr. Anita Borges, a luminary in the field of oncopathology, passed away at the age of 78 in Gorakhpur, leaving behind a legacy that will be deeply missed by the global cancer care community.


Known affectionately as the "Queen of Histopathology," Dr. Borges was revered by pathologists, oncologists, and onco-surgeons alike for her extraordinary brilliance and contributions to the discipline. Her dedication to elevating histopathology standards in India and beyond has inspired countless medical professionals.


Dr. Borges' career spanned over five decades, during which she served as Professor and Head of Surgical Pathology at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai, until her retirement in 2004. She continued to shape the field as Director of the SRL-D Centre of Excellence in Histopathology and Head of Histopathology at SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim, where she established the Centre of Oncopathology.


A voracious reader and multidimensional thinker, Dr. Borges was known for her accuracy in diagnostics, often challenging questionable medical ideas and urging her students to "listen to the cells." Her sharp judgment was trusted across continents, earning her the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Society of Head and Neck Oncologists among numerous honors.


Dr. Borges trained at prestigious global centers including the Royal Marsden in London and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. Choosing to return to India despite lucrative opportunities abroad, she strengthened the country's cancer care ecosystem.


Colleagues and students remember Dr. Borges as a pioneer, teacher, mentor, and uncompromising seeker of the truth – a dear friend who shared knowledge, ideas, and compassion. She ensured her students received recognition for their work, embodying academic brilliance, integrity, and warmth.


Her passing leaves the cancer care fraternity deeply shaken. Dr. Anita Borges' legacy of science pursued with honesty and humility will continue to change lives and inspire generations of medical professionals. Her wisdom, warmth, and guiding presence will be truly missed.
